Am I Suitable?

It is important to keep realistic expectations in mind to avoid disappointment- this is the advice you are likely to hear whatever cosmetic surgery procedure you are undergoing. Most surgeons are likely to tell you that what you need to be aiming for is an improved appearance rather than the perfect one, and that if you seek this, then you are likely to be much happier with the end results.

There are no age restrictions for the surgical procedure, though most surgeons would prefer to wait until someone is eighteen or over before performing the operation. This is because they prefer to wait until the breasts have stopped developing.

There are a number of other considerations, however, when deciding if you are suitable for breast reduction surgery. The factors involved will be discussed between you and your surgeon during your consultations. Firstly health issues must be taken into account and so medical conditions must be discussed with your surgeon otherwise you will be putting yourself in unnecessary risk. All surgical procedures have a small risk with them so making sure your surgeon is aware of everything about your physical health will make you safer and help to ensure your procedure, as well as your recovery time, goes as smoothly as possible.

To be suitable for breast reduction surgery you might be experiencing certain physical or psychological problems related to the size of your breasts. Firstly of course exercise would be made difficult with larger breasts and such actions could cause much pain. The physical problems can also include pains in your back, neck and shoulders along with skin problems, poor posture, rashes or infections under the breasts. Another problem could be grooves/weals where the bra straps meet the skin. Psychologically, large breasts can attract unwanted attention along with harassment. They can cause self-consciousness, depression and a difficulty in finding fitting clothes. Breast reduction surgery could help in overcoming these ailments.

Of course, you can also undergo the procedure if you are male as well. The procedure is not exclusive to women as male breast growth is an issue that some men have to deal with.

Before your surgery, you will also talk with your surgeon on how to prepare for the procedure, making sure you are in good physical health to undergo it, this might include avoiding certain medications as well as making sure that your wishes are realistic (see What Is Breast Reduction?).
